Doctor Aviation Review

Doctor Aviation
Doctor Aviation is an interactive and engaging flight learning platform. Doctor Aviation teaches students all about aviation from history to parts of the airplane to different types of aircraft. It is a one of a kind learning experience created for teens to adults. I have been viewing the lessons with my 12 year old son and we have both enjoyed the content. He has always been interested in aviation so this has been a good fit for us to view as a family.

There are three basic parts to each lesson: technical trivia, notable innovators, and legendary aircraft/events. This is perfect for breaking each lesson into three shorter segments for younger students. Technical trivia teaches about the technical aspects of aircraft. For example, in lesson two students are introduced to the vocabulary of the parts of the airplane. Notable innovators introduces students to the historical figures who contributed to the advancing of flight--Wilbur and Orville Wright, Chuck Yeager, and many others. Legendary aircraft/events describes the details behind an aircraft or historical event in the history of flight. In lesson one we learned about the Wright brothers' first flight at Kitty Hawk. Lesson two was a discussion about the history of the P51 and how it came to be built during WW2. Fascinating information that anyone would find interesting, but especially for an airplane enthusiast.

Each lesson includes additional materials to be utilized by the students. If you are having a high school student complete this for high school credit, then I highly suggest having him or her complete these extra assignments. There are note taking pages that help you follow along as you watch the videos and there are additional assignments that you can pick and choose from information to further the research about a significant topic discussed in the lesson. We learned about Chuck Yeager during lesson two and three. I remember as a kid seeing that book around the house, so now I'm thinking I'd like to read more about him. I just need to hunt down that book.

Doctor Aviation is an online course. When you subscribe to it, you receive six month access. This is plenty of time to finish the course. There are 15 lessons total. Each video is between 45 minutes to just over an hour depending on the topics. You would also want to allow time to explore the additional activities. I appreciate being able to stream these online, but I'd love to have lifetime access to these videos. We are airplane enthusiasts around here (thanks to Papa), and I'd love to have access to these when my son is in high school. I really think he would get a lot out of the program at an older age.

You can view the entire first session online. The beginning of this video tells how the course works and is really informative, so if you are not sure about it or wondering if it's a good fit for your family, watching that first part of the video is super helpful. I was completely sold on the program after watching that introduction. The rest of the video lesson progresses and you will see what each lesson will look like after that. It's a really great way to see if it is a fit for your family and is super generous of the company to let you view an entire lesson as opposed to a sample.
We actually have been able to have a conversation with the presenter. When a person or place was mentioned in the lessons that my son recognized or knew something about, he wanted to send an email and tell Doctor Aviation about that experience. In lesson three, he briefly mentioned Bob Hoover. What is really cool is that several years ago we actually met Bob Hoover and were able to get a picture taken with him. Each time we emailed him, Doctor Aviation responded right away with encouragement and thanking us for sharing with him.
Another time that we emailed him, we asked him if he was going to be at Oshkosh this year. We have been able to go to Oshkosh several times in the past. Caden wanted to know if Doctor Aviation was going to be there this year so he could meet him. Unfortunately Doctor Aviation will not be there, but I'm sure there will be plenty of other fun things for my son to do. Oshkosh is the world's largest air show that takes place once each year in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. This picture is from several years ago when we all were able to go up there with Papa. Fun times for sure!
